Garden Patch Farm CSA Newsletter #13

October 4, 2005

Hello Members,

Only table use on the tomatoes, as there is not enough for canning/freezing now.

Did You Know?
Comments from CSA Members at the Madison Area CSA Coalition....

"I thought it was kind of neat having to shell [the dried beans]. You'd do all that [work] and you'd only end up with a small container. I said, "Wow...I never knew this."

"It reminds you at a more basic level where your sustenance comes from, the idea that you eat different things during the course of the growing season because different things grow at different times. Otherwise, you go the the grocery store and the lettuce is always there...everything is always there so you end up eating a pretty restricted group of vegetables."

Members, please remember to check off your name on the sign-in sheet. Thank you very much.

This Week's Picks
-Cabbage-
-Celery-
-Eggplant-
-Some garlic- (Tim said we had to let it cure (dry a bit) for a few weeks)
-Hot Peppers-
-Peppers- (A mix of sweets and hot)
-Kale- (red as well as the green)
-Potatoes-
-Tomatillos- (Native to Mexico, a tomato-type fruit that is used in salsas and sauces; we have a cookbook highlighting them you can examine)
-Tomatoes- (Enough for table use ONLY--if we don't get a frost).

Tim is taking requests for the VERY large-leaved cabbage ("Late Flat Dutch" variety)--great for stuffing. Let us know how many you want and he will have it picked for you.

NO more broccoli for the year.

You-Cut Herbs
Tips and ideas...
-Cut as much as you would like and store/freeze in freezer bags or jars.
As soon as we have a heavy enough frost, the basil will die first. So, cut LOTS of it now, while you can. You are welcome to cut the 2-3 feet branches off.

You-Cut Flowers
-Cosmos-
-Zinnias-

For those of you that ordered turkey, the pick up weekend will be:
Friday, November 4th, 5pm-7pm
Saturday, November 5th, 11am-3pm and
Sunday, November 6th, 4pm-6pm

If we still have produce for you, the turkey hours are going to be the same as produce pick up days. Please pick up your turkey when picking up produce. If you need to cancel your turkey order, please let us know as soon as possible--preferably before October 10th. In fact, we need to know whether you want the turkey or not--by Oct 10th.
